Europiana Album Review

Released: 25th June 2021

Published By: Lanza Music Limited

The British-Italian artist Jack Savoretti has seen a rapid turnaround, returning after two years with his latest album. Europiana is a combination of lockdown musings and a colourful embracing of his routes; it follows up on 2019’s Singing To Strangers.

Savoretti has maintained a steady output since his debut album in 2007; Between The Minds established his commanding, soulful voice and from here the singer has continued to rise. Having featured on several compilations and external projects, Jack has oozed style and this seventh compilation is another brilliant showcase. Europiana is his second release to top the charts in recent years, a well-deserved achievement for the often-overlooked singer.

Throughout the album, Savoretti taps directly into his Italian heritage with many of the songs planted in a slick sense of luxury. He looks back on the many summers spent in that part of Europe and the end result is a recreation of classical seventies music, specifically the disco genre. The sight of beautiful Mediterranean waters often serves the backdrop for many tracks alongside a regularly uplifting feel. It’s a distinctively modern sounding set with a hefty use of synths that match the artist’s raspy voice. “Dancing In The Living Room” and “Too Much History” flow so naturally, while “Who’s Hurting Who” is imbued with a serious funk thanks to a collaboration with Nile Rogers.

Jack still finds great success working with other artists; John Oates and Gizmo Varilles get involved in Europiana with equally strong results. “When You’re Lonely” and “Calling Me Back To You” feature complementary instrumentals that massively enhance the tracks. Backing vocals also make their presence felt, but the artist hasn’t abandoned his more echoing and reflective works either. “More Than Ever” and “The Way You Said Goodbye” are more traditional and romanticised in nature; these songs tie more closely to the relationships Jack maintained while stuck at home. “War Of Words” is a rousing conclusion as Savoretti reflects on the many societal divisions we grapple with today. It’s a song that calls for healing, setting itself apart from every other track on the list.

Europiana’s vibrant and soulful track-list never compromises on style and creativity. In short, it’s everything Jack Savoretti has defined himself with; powerful vocals spread across a wide array of tempos and tones. He deserves wider recognition in the crowded music industry.
