Kygo Album Review

Released: 21st June 2024

Published by: RCA Records

Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll, best known as his stage name Kygo, has released a self-titled album to complement the summer. It’s more than capable of exceeding previous efforts.

The Norweigan DJ has never been more popular, having rode the last ten years to the top of the genre with many chart-topping remixes and four major albums. His fifth release is the biggest and most extravagant yet, totalling eighteen tracks over an hour of music. The album features a wide range of samples, collaborations and personal creativity that really shows how far the artist has come.

The song list features a killer combo of returning faces and new artists. It was only a matter of time until Kygo teamed up with fellow Norwegian star Sigrid; “The Feeling” is a pulse-pounding opener that amps up the rhythm. “Surrender” with Fred Well is a well-composed night tune that builds up into a rapid speed. Further down the list, Zak Abel and Sandro Cavazza are back for some slower, more reflective pieces. “Lighthouse” and “Fade Away” take the artists to a more solemn place while still employing their respective strengths. The latter is particularly effective with traditional piano solos. The Jonas Brothers also make an appearance with “Healing (Shattered Heart)”.

On the other side, we have several rocking samples that emphasise the DJ’s continued knack for re-imagining older releases. “Whatever” with Ava Max channels Shakira to create an infectious beat and “For Life” brings in Nile Rogers for an alternative take on Modjo’s Lady from 2001. The best track by far is “Me Before You” with Plested which seamlessly transitions from softer acoustics to a brilliant electronic beat. This sweeping tone is also shared by “Without You”, a thunderous collaboration with HAYLA that is easily the most energised song of the bunch.

Even when acting on a solo basis, Kygo is still able to deliver some memorable tracks. “Can’t Do It On My Own”, “Found Another Love” and “You Can Feel” all feel much more personal, being produced entirely with the DJ’s editing prowess. To cap it all off, Kygo remixes a well-known track from M83: “Wait”; his softer piano compositions are a perfect match with the original lyrics, gradually building up a new tone that brings the DJ’s older releases to mind.

Kygo is easily the very best collection Kyrre has created so far; it’s a comprehensive collection that showcases his talents while upping the variety in every way. Fans of electronic and tropical music are in for a real treat, but anyone looking for a set of upbeat and feisty tracks will also be thoroughly engaged.
