Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus Book Review

Released: 2nd March 2023 (Paperback)

Genre: Fiction, Drama, Historical

After many years of copywriting and creative producing, American author Bonnie Garmus has moved into the realm of fictional stories. Her debut novel, Lessons in Chemistry, is a real tour-de-force, an honest yet uplifting tale of feminism and perseverance.

In the 1950s and early 1960s, Elizabeth Zott is an aspiring chemist, but breaking into the sector in Hastings is far from easy. Zott has to contend with many awful roadblocks along the way, from abusive managers to a wider society that constantly tells women what they can and can’t do with their lives. Even with these problems, Elizabeth and other characters still find success and meaningful relationships while making their own mark on those around them. She soon forms a bond with fellow scientist Calvin Evans and a whirlwind romance ensues. The two halves come together beautifully, showing all the ups and downs of the protagonist’s life. On one side, the book doesn’t shy away from the rampant sexism and disgraceful behaviour of the setting, but on the other the deep bonds between the characters will pull at your heartstrings and deliver a strong dose of inspiration.

You believe in Elizabeth and those close to her from start to finish, holding great sympathy when she is put through hardship and elation when she reaches her next big milestone. Garmus has taken plenty of inspiration from her own life, weaving in several metaphors like rowing being a metaphor for balance and the connection between chemistry and relationships. Every character interaction is presented in great detail with many reflective moments as the story goes on, including the flustered TV producer Walter Pine, who is at the mercy of his controlling bosses or Miss Frask, a secretary who goes through her own change of heart. Some chapters take place from the perspective of the family dog Six-Thirty, adding another dimension to the plot. By personifying the pet, we get a deeper look into Elizabeth and Calvin’s lives, encouraging more empathy from the reader.

Recommended?

YES: Lessons in Chemistry is a brilliant and compelling novel, one where you’re fully connected to both the characters and the challenges they face. Every chapter does a fine job of presenting the trials and tribulations of the time period; yet it’s the layering of deep emotions, metaphors and human connections that makes the book so memorable. You should pick up a copy as soon as possible.

(Lessons in Chemistry will also be adapted into a TV series of the same name starring Brie Larson later in 2023)
