Bo Burnham: Inside Movie Review

Released: 30th May 2021 (Netflix)

Length: 87 Minutes

Certificate: 15

Director: Bo Burnham

Starring: Bo Burnham

Of the many comedic performers working today, Bo Burnham is one of the most popular, boasting a massive presence on YouTube and beyond. I had never heard of him before checking out his latest production; rest assured you’ll become a fan quickly following his partnership with Netflix. Over a year in the making, the solo project is a contemporary and highly relatable project.

As the title implies, Bo Burnham: Inside is all about the time we spent under quarantine throughout 2020. It’s Mr Burnham all on his lonesome as he runs through the many components of the global lockdown. Endless Instagram posts, gaming live-streams and some light political banter; all of it surrounds topics we’re well-versed in. This ensures that every joke hits a bull’s-eye. Often our leading man will alternate back and forth between two types of delivery; it’s one part commentary and another more musical. Every skit and topic covered is cleverly written and loaded with sarcastic humour, though I found myself wishing for some external commentary. Some further comedy on outside events from an interior perspective could have made for more inventive scenarios. Still, what’s here is very enjoyable.

Using a modest combination of musical instruments and lighting setups contained within a single room, Inside’s minimalistic setup is utilised to its fullest potential. While the songs are reflective of modern production methods, they all accomplish multiple things at once. Not only are they incredibly catchy, but the placement of rhymes, language and rhythms plays a major role in the film’s flow. Burnham’s talents in both singing and instruments blend together so seamlessly and the way Inside winds from one track to the next makes for a highly memorable narrative. Multiple camera angles create some snappy transitions and the lighting colours are a perfect fit for the soundtrack. Every element here combines into an engaging whole.

The events of the last year are sure to be discussed for a long time to come. As far as comedic retellings of the pandemic go, Bo Burnham’s collection of skits and soundtracks makes for an unbelievably entertaining ride. The way he effortlessly swaps between topics, styles and tones is a brilliant achievement, one which speaks volumes of the comedian’s creativity. Check it out at your earliest convenience.
